Best water filters for lead removal UK 2026

By Keith Wilks · 24 years filtration experience✓ NSF certified picks only12 min read · Last updated 14 June 2026
The short version: Standard jug filters — including Brita Maxtra+ — are not certified for lead removal. If your home was built before 1970, you almost certainly have lead pipes. You need a filter certified to NSF 53 or NSF 58. Renting or on a budget? The ZeroWater pitcher (~£35) is your answer. Want permanent protection for a family? The Waterdrop G3 RO (~£350). Both are independently verified. Use the tool below to get a recommendation for your exact situation, or scroll down for the full guide.

Do you actually have lead pipes? Check in 2 minutes

Find your internal stop tap — usually under the kitchen sink. Look at the pipe material:

⚠️Lead: Dull grey, soft — you can scratch it with a coin. Homes built before 1970 have a high chance of lead pipes.
Copper: Brown or orange colour. Common in 1970s–1990s homes. Not lead.
Plastic: White, grey, or blue. Found in modern homes. No lead risk.
ℹ️Not sure?: Request a free water test from your water company, or use a home lead test kit (£15–30 on Amazon).

⚠️ Filters that do NOT remove lead

Many popular filters only carry NSF 42 certification — which covers chlorine taste and odour only. They do not remove lead. Do not assume your current filter protects you.

How to verify any filter claim yourself

1

Go to info.nsf.org/Certified/DWTU and search the exact product name

2

Look specifically for NSF 53 lead reduction — not just "NSF 53." The listing must name lead specifically.

3

Check the reduction percentage — NSF 53 requires reduction from 150 µg/L to ≤10 µg/L (93%+ reduction minimum)

4

Verify the certification is current — certifications expire. Check the date on the database listing before you buy.

A note from Keith — Filter Authority

UK tap water leaving treatment works is generally safe to drink. That matters, and I do not want to overstate the risk. The concern begins in household plumbing — specifically older lead pipes that water sits in before it reaches your tap. Filtration is not something every household must buy. But if you have lead pipes and children or a pregnancy in the home, a certified filter is the most practical protection available while pipe replacement is arranged. If budget is genuinely tight, simple habits help: always use fresh cold water for drinking and cooking, and run the tap for 30 seconds after water has been standing in the pipes.
