The straight answer
PFAS are a large group of persistent chemicals. Public drinking water is managed through treatment, monitoring and regulatory oversight, but the approach is not identical across the UK nations. If you are worried about your own supply, start with your supplier’s information; if you consider filtration, assess the exact model’s PFAS evidence rather than a headline about its technology.
What are PFAS?
PFAS means per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. They have been used in industrial and consumer applications because they can provide water, grease and stain resistance. The Drinking Water Inspectorate lists uses including food packaging, cookware, cosmetics, textile treatments and firefighting foam. Their persistence is why they are often called “forever chemicals”.
PFAS exposure is not a water-only issue. The DWI says drinking water is one possible route alongside products, food and household dust. A drinking-water filter can only address the water route.
What do the UK nations currently use for PFAS?
The units matter: 0.1 micrograms per litre (µg/L) equals 100 nanograms per litre (ng/L). The named substances, whether the value is a standard or guidance, and the way it is applied differ. Calling one row simply “stricter” would be misleading.
| Area | Current position | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Scotland | 0.1 µg/L (100 ng/L) for the sum of 20 PFAS | Scotland’s Centre of Expertise for Waters says this standard was introduced in January 2023. |
| England and Wales | 0.1 µg/L (100 ng/L) DWI guidance for the sum of 48 named PFAS | The DWI says there is no statutory PFAS standard, but companies are required to comply with this guidance. |
| Northern Ireland | No statutory PFAS drinking-water standard | NI Water says it monitors against EU-recast parameters: 0.1 µg/L Sum of PFAS and 0.5 µg/L PFAS Total, while those parameters are not transposed into NI regulations. |
How to check local information
Find your supplier first
Our lookup identifies the likely supplier and links to official water-quality information. It uses manually reviewed regional guidance; it is not a live property test or incident feed.
Check your water companyRead the official report
Search your supplier’s annual information for PFAS, PFOS or PFOA. A specific concern near an industrial site, airport or private supply may need appropriate professional advice or accredited testing.
Do filters remove PFAS?
Some systems can reduce some PFAS, but a category name is not enough. Reverse osmosis and carbon-based filters should be judged by the exact model, named PFAS compounds, test method, claimed result, stated filter life and accessible performance documentation. A certification for a different contaminant does not automatically prove PFAS reduction.
Avoid blanket promises
Do not assume every RO system, carbon filter or jug reduces PFAS. Equally, do not dismiss a model only because of its category. The evidence has to belong to that exact product and its claimed service life.
Questions people often ask
Is PFAS in UK drinking water regulated?
The position differs across the UK. England and Wales use DWI PFAS guidance rather than a statutory PFAS standard. Scotland has a 0.1 µg/L standard for the sum of 20 PFAS. NI Water says Northern Ireland has no PFAS standard in its drinking-water regulations, while it monitors against EU-recast parameters.
Do all water filters remove PFAS?
No. A filter’s PFAS claim must belong to the exact model, named compound or compounds, test method, result, stated filter life and published performance documentation. A technology name, brand or unrelated certification is not enough.
How can I check PFAS information for my area?
Start with your water supplier’s annual information and use our water-quality lookup to identify the right supplier. The lookup is manually reviewed regional guidance, not a live property test or incident feed. A specific local concern may need appropriate accredited laboratory testing.
Does boiling water remove PFAS?
Do not treat boiling as a PFAS-removal method. If PFAS is your concern, look for a model-specific filtration claim with supporting performance documentation.
Is water the only PFAS exposure route?
No. The DWI notes that drinking water is one possible route alongside products, food and household dust. A water filter can only address the drinking-water route.
A calm next step
PFAS is sensible to understand, not a reason to panic. Check your supplier, use a model-specific evidence standard if you choose filtration, and remember that water is only one possible exposure route.
