The best choice depends on what you need to improve and what your tenancy allows. A jug or standard-tap filter is the simplest option for taste and odour. A countertop or gravity system avoids plumbing. An under-sink filter needs permission and should only be chosen where the model's documented claim matches your concern.
Ask your landlord or letting agent first. Even a direct-connect system changes the plumbing beneath the sink. Keep the original fittings and agree how the installation will be removed or left at the end of the tenancy.
Do not assume a jug reduces lead because it is described as certified. A certification for lead-free materials is not a lead-reduction claim. Check the exact model's performance sheet or certification listing for lead reduction before buying for that purpose.
Countertop reverse-osmosis systems generally use a tank that you fill manually, so they do not need a plumber or permanent pipe connection. Check the exact model's power, drainage, maintenance and water-hardness requirements before buying.
Match the standard to your concern and the exact model. NSF/ANSI 42 covers aesthetic effects such as chlorine taste and odour. NSF/ANSI 53 can cover particular health-related reductions, including lead where specifically listed. Reverse-osmosis systems use NSF/ANSI 58. A standard alone is not a promise that every model reduces every contaminant.
